The Rez

You ever have one of those moments when someone you know tells you something? That something you think isn’t important or maybe you think of it as a joke, only later it turns out to be real important; life changing even? At the time, though, you dismiss it even though there’s that nagging vibe at the back of your mind telling you different? Maybe it should’ve put the hairs on the back of your neck on end but it didn’t so you forget it. H’yeah, never do that again! ‘Course you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. OH! By the way, I’m Randy Crowfeather...

With it being mid fall, it would normally be a surprise for it to be this warm. I’m driving along a highway where other vehicles passed by every few minutes. In Duluth, where I work on the docks, those who know me think nothing of the car I drive, not new, not a beater but three years old when I first purchased it and hardly flashy though clearly not a destined junker. There are those who’d half expected me either on a horse with a war lance in hand, buffalo skin clothes and paint all over, or in a pickup with a bottle wrapped in a bag that’d get me pulled over if a cop saw it opened. I don’t like having long hair... Even before my six years in the U.S. Navy!

“T’huh! They’ll let anyone into this century,” I say aloud only half addressing a report of yet another hate crime onto whomever the ‘suspect’ thought could distract him from his personal demons.

I decided to switch over to the community radio station specifically dedicated to a combination of tribal and modern types like rock, country, or even that new age weirdness.

They also air a few reservation announcements. It’s just to get away from the dreary noise of this news break. It’s also funny to hear a bulletin on a person for opening up his store and other nonevents, unsurprisingly similar to other really small towns.

Less often to be heard, pretty much on any radio, was a report on finding yet another cow carcass within reservation lands. As rare as wolves were even up here in North Dakota, ranchers still complained about them. In cases where animals had killed livestock, some university people had once produced the results of a five state twenty-two month study demonstrating over sixty percent of all livestock attacks were solely due to dogs either unleashed and unfenced or stray and feral.

These cows had been killed on cattle ranches and dumped on reservation lands. This is what I hear the C.J., named ironically enough Greg Little White Man announces. I get within sight of the Spirit Lake Sioux Reservation. Here are small sporadic houses and trailers. My grandfather lives in a house like some of these at the other end of town. I used to check up on him every weekend for the past ten years, but in more recent months, I’ve been skipping.
